My name is Valerie, and I am a sugar addict.

I admit to having a sweet tooth. I blame my father (it's hereditary you know, can't do anything about it). I love chocolate and desserts. I like candy, too, but I tend to favour the type that can be found in asian groceries instead of the north american kind. (Though who am I to turn down a gummy worm?)

There is something exotic and at the same time comforting about asian candy and sweets to me. I grew up eating haw flakes and hopia (Chinese moon cakes?). Asian desserts and candies usually aren't quite as sweet as their north american counterparts, and come in more interesting flavours than grape, cherry, orange and lemon. Red bean, taro, green tea, green bean, sesame, mango, and ginger are only some of the flavours you see. (The other day, we saw chicken flavoured crackers. Um?)

I found these at the place in downtown Kitchener, right by the farmer's market, when Richard and I were in Ontario this past weekend. I picked them up because they were pretty. The only information on the package in English doesn't tell me much: "Best qualityand goodtaste, It will captivate with relish." They seem to be a Chinese? version of shortbread, soft and crumbly. I think the black bits are some sort of bean paste. Richard and I agree that they're probably meant to be eaten with tea of some sort.

What I really like about these cookies is that out of a package of 16, there are 10 unique designs. These really are beautiful! The stylized flower images are perfect for this time of year.

The cookies remind me a little of the German springerle we used to give out around Christmas at Doon, although the springerle are anise flavoured.

Hi from Austria! Like you, I do have a sweet tooth, I might even say I'm a real candy/sugar/chocolate addict! What I never tasted yet are these kind of Asian candies that you showed in your entry, and I'm totally stunned! They look so incredibly yummy, and the ingredients you mentioned will sure make them taste heavenly! You certainly inspired me to hed for the next Asian grocery store soonest possible and check it out for similar goodies! Thanks for sharing these pics and info!
